Understanding Anxiety

Fight, flight, freeze or appease response

Anxiety, stress and anger are all part of the fight, flight, freeze or appease response.

The Happiness Trap: Evolution of the Human Mind Dr Russ Harris. Fight, flight, freeze, appease

We all have a part of our brain that is constantly scanning for threats to our safety. This can be in the form or a physical threat (i.e being attacked or a poisonous snake), social (i.e exclusion / rejection) or being critical of ourselves. The brain and body react in the same way getting ready to fight (anger) or run away (anxiety).

During the fight or flight the pathway we think in, changes from a slower more rational route to a very quick pathway designed for action, i.e slamming on the breaks in a car.

3 Things about anxiety Dr Julie Smith
